Back in 2016 PerthALIVE participated in a Practitioner Working Group convened by the then Department of Planning to look at Design Guidelines for Apartments in WA.  So we were delighted to attend the launch on 18th February 2019 of new residential design codes for apartments.

Amongst other purposes the document “informs the community on the principles of good design and planning practice for the development of residential apartments.”

It is a comprehensive document outlining a range of elements of good design and listing acceptable outcomes and design guidance.

Planning Minister Rita Saffioti said,

“In conjunction with METRONET, Design WA provides the platform to accommodate a growing population, close to new and existing public transport infrastructure and good design will be central to meeting community needs and expectations now and into the future.

“This addresses many of the issues that concern communities including walkable neighbourhoods, retaining street trees, providing green open spaces, ensuring new apartment blocks fit in with their surroundings, parking and privacy concerns.

“Importantly, Design WA provides reassurance that any future development has undergone rigorous scrutiny to ensure the best possible outcomes.”

The Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage will build on this design work by developing guidelines for medium density and precinct developments. PerthALIVE looks forward to the opportunity to contribute to that work during the planned consultation phase.
